Graf Zeppelin Collection

Although less famous than its sister ship HINDENBURG, which burned in Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1937 spelling the end of Germany's lighter than air ships held aloft with Hydrogen, the Graf Zeppelin was probably the most successful of Count Zeppelin's creations. It flew mostly in Europe but also around the world and to Latin America as well. This group of original Graf Zeppelin items were obtained from a collection in Eastern Europe.

Graf Zeppelin Flight Commander's Badge - From itsGrafZeppelinFlightCommander'sBadge.jpg (93945 bytes) home port in Friedrichshafen Germany,   the Graf Zeppelin made trips all over and around the world. This badge was worn by its Flight Commander or Captain on a trip from Friedrishshafen to Tokyo, to Los Angeles, and to Lakehurst, New Jersey where the Hindenburg later burned. The people pictured are from Japanese history. Stiff cardboard.  The names are Honda Tadakatsu(1548-1601), Kusonoki  Masashige(1294-1336), Minamotono Yoshiie (1039-1106), Imagawa Yoshimoto(1519-1560), and Momo Tarou (Folklore Hero). Condition is excellent - No damage. $46 + shipping.

 

 

We have recently acquired several pieces of beautiful "Nippon" porcelain. Nippon is the name by which Japanese identified their country. From about 1900 to 1920, Japanese porcelain for export was identified by this name. After 1920, usually identified by "Made in Japan" until WWII.

Undamaged except 2 each have one small fleabite on the edge. Bottom says "Hand-painted Nippon" and has a center seal with "M" in the center which stands for "Midori," the importer.  $41 + shipping.

Absolutely no damage! Slight wear to the gold on one of the handles of the round plate. Each is approximately 7 1/4 inches in diameter and marked on the bottom with several Japanese characters and "Hand-painted Nippon." $45 + shipping.

No chips, breaks, or crazing.  Base says "Hand-painted" and has a leaf with "Nippon" beneath it. 5 inches tall. $39 + shipping.

 

 

Royal Dalton Milk Pitcher (c. 1902) - This is a beauRoyalDaltonPitcherRoland.jpg (128535 bytes)tiful  early Edwardian milk pitcher made by Royal Dalton.  Has the Royal Dalton seal on the base, a Lion,  and "England." Hand-painted and signed by the artist, "M." Base also says "Orlando" which is the name by which the knight, Roland, is known throughout much of Europe. Roland was the Emperor, Charlemagne's bravest knight as well as his nephew.  He warned the emperor of the treachery of the Moorish king, Marsilion and of his father-in-law, Ganilon. Roland was killed in the battle of Roncevalles, while fighting to save Charlemagne's army. There are no chips or cracks to this pitcher, only slight crazing from age on the inside and handle. $93 + shipping.

 

 

RussianRussIcon.jpg (615294 bytes) Icon 1700s to 1800s. - Depicts the crucifixion with figures in adoration. Note the skull at the base of the cross signifying Golgatha, the "place of the skull," which the gospels state was the place of crucifixion. Solid brass with enamel. 6 1/2" by 4". $150 + shipping.

 

 

Czarist Russian Village Elder's Badge: - This is a nice rarity: a heavy, brass Volost Elder's (Volostnoi Starshina) RussVolostBadge.jpg (165178 bytes) Badge dated February 19, 1861. The peasant commune executed administrative tasks in the local community, and was an actor in the larger administrative system of  RussVolostBadgeRev.jpg (153356 bytes) nineteenth century Russia. Several peasant communes formed a "Volost," and the Volost Elder was elected by the male household  heads. A court of elected peasant magistrates operated in each Volost with the right to hear cases involving petty civil  and criminal cases subject to tight State adminVolostnojStarshina.jpg (52006 bytes)istration. At lower left you see a group photo of volost starshinas gathered in Moscow May 1896 in honor of the Royal Coronation celebration. We believe the badge was worn about the neck on a chain. $225 + shipping. 

 

 

1890s Kerosene Railroad Lantern - Nice pieRailroadLantern.jpg (219404 bytes)ce of Americana. Top Marked, "Traffic Gard Manufacturing Co. Embury New York USA No. 40." Base Marked "City  of Milwaukee." This is an original KEROSENE  lantern used to direct railroad traffic in Milwaukee, Wisc. Originally, the top was bright red and base yellow. Overall quite good condition, but probably needs repainting. We have made no effort to do that, leaving that decision to the ultimate owner.  $65 + shipping

 

 

Genuine Hand-carved Meerschaum Pipe and Case (c. 1890) - The name "meerschaum" comes from the GermanMeerschaumPipe.jpg (152966 bytes) and means "sea foam." It is a cream-colored mineral called magnesium silicate. In earlier times it was found floating in the Black Sea and was believed to be petrified sea foam..This pipe belonged to the Great-Grandfather of a friend of ours. He was born in 1860 and began smoking this pipe at about the age of 30. This pipe with original amber mouthpiece was made by Wm. DeMuth Co. and is 3.75" long from the edge of the bowl to tip of mouthpiece. There are no chips on the pipe or the carving, but the mouthpiece has a crack in it. The case too is in very good condition as is the velvet lining. Kovel's Guide to Antiques listed an almost identical pipe which sold for $115 in 1997, and its value certainly hasn't diminished since then. $80 + shipping. 

 

 

Victorian Burmese Glass Vase - Exquisitely beautiful piece of BurmeseVase.jpg (94191 bytes)glassware! The beautiful coloration  of this  type  of American Art glassware was achieved  by the addition  of expensive  elements like Gold and Uranium and is almost impossible to duplicate today due to governmental control of radioactive elements like Uranium. It was then frosted with an acid application. Burmese glass was made by Mt. Washington Glass Company until Pairpoint purchased the company. This lovely piece is 10 1/2" tall. The reddish portion is considerably  lighter than the picture, being a delicate salmon color. $110 + shipping.

 

 

Lovely Pre-World War I Accidental Porcelain Bowl - Understated elegance! This bowl was part of a linBavarianBowl.jpg (215684 bytes)e called Alba Kunst (white art) made by  Albotha Kaiser in  Bavaria before World War I and so states on the bottom along with the Prussian crown. 5" wide at the mouth and has 2 graceful scroll handles. Old Ice Cream Scoops from a bankrupt Drug Store. - ThIceCreamScoops.jpg (95151 bytes)ese 3 were acquired from a drug store in business for    over 100 years. All are undamaged and fully functional.  During a large portion of their business, they had a soda fountain. The oldest is in the center from late 1920s-early 1930s. Unmarked. Wooden handle and it functions by turning the little knob on the back, which is difficult to see in the foto. $20 + shipping. That on left is late 1930s-early 1940s by Gilchrist and is so-marked. 1950s Hazel Atlas Drink Mixer with 6 Glasses. - An exquisite set! HazelAtlasMartiniMixer.jpg (92140 bytes)Absolutely unblemished. Only the slightest of fading of the red color on one glass. Looks as if it was never used at all. Red colors and chrome much brighter than the picture. We had to use a filter to avoid flashback from the brilliant chrome. Beautiful Venetian Art Glass Vase (1950s) - This lovely 11" tall vase is a TackyVenetianArtGlass.jpg (76151 bytes)bright cherry color with gold trimming which does not show overly well in the picture. Pictures quaint little Forget-Me-Nots on a gold shield scroll background.  Clear swirl pedestal base. Made in Italy in the 1950s and undamaged. $11 + actual shipping charges.

 

 

 

 

Cut-To-Clear Carafe & Glass - These were quite popular during the early Carafes&Glasses.jpg (162258 bytes)part of the last century. They were used as individual water or juice decanters, or sometimes  for  wine, at the bedside or on a working desk in a den or library. We have two sets: one is ruby red and the other cobalt. The carafe is designed to house the glass on top as a top. The cobalt is shown alone to clarify the exquisite cut-to-clear pattern, which is identical in both. Pictures are very difficult with these deeply colored items. Both sets are undamaged. Beautiful! Either set is $55 + actual shipping charges. Both sets for $100 + actual shipping.

 

 

Ashtray Made From Insulator - You may have seen these insulInsulatorAshTray.jpg (77547 bytes)ators supporting high tension wires across the country when you were a child in the early part of the last century. They were made from heavy glass, like this one,  or from porcelain. Someone made a stand from heavy copper electrical wire for this one several years ago. It is absolutely undamaged and  unblemished and a much brighter emerald-green than the scan reveals.  $11 incl. s+i in USA.

 

 

Oval Portraits (2) - We do not know the exact age of these prints,Portraits2.jpg (89958 bytes) but they came from an old estate. Definitely post-1900. They have wooden frames and are slightly over 13" high. We believe them to be English. Slight edge damage on both frames, which is not, however, obvious when they are hung. Both have the same flesh tones, but that on right appears lighter due to foto in direct sunlight. $25 + Actual shipping charges. 

 

 

MEDICAL, DENTISTRY, PHARMACY

Watch this section! We have recently acquired a LARGE amount of material from the sale of pharmacies in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Philadelphia and will be adding to this section over the next few weeks. Sales of pharmacies are becoming increasingly rare, and there will be little of this material available in the forseeable future. Many of these items make great gifts for the doctor, pharmacist, or student.

 

Medical Blood Cups (2) circa 1900 - Any of you who like MedicalBloodCups.jpg (69999 bytes)to watch old movies may have seen these in use. Before the advent of penicillin, Diphtheria and pheumonia were horrendous killers - especially of children. Doctors often heated these glass instruments and placed them on a child's back, creating a partial vacuum. They were often used as many as a dozen at a time. It sucked blood to the surface and bordered on quackery. $30 each + shipping or $55 for the pair.  

 

Medical Rectal Dilator circa 1900 - Before the advent of MedicalRectalDilator.jpg (89421 bytes)sigmoidoscopy, doctors used these instruments to examine the rectum and instill medications through the small hole visible in the top. $40 shipping. 

 

 

 

PHARMACY

All of these bottles are undamaged unless otherwise stated. Labels are usually dark and show wear as might be expected from their age. Some pictures are too dark to see any detail due to dark aging, but the descriptions are accurate. And remember our return policy from our POLICIES Page: We will take back anything we sell for any reason or NO reason. We believe these are all bottles you will be proud to own. Also, bottles containing medicines are sold for collector value only. We caution most strongly against using any of the material which is 50 to 150 years old!!

CUBEBAE.    Each is pristine with no chips, cracks, etc. Small amount of sediment inside. Bottles are dusty and dirty after some 130 years on the shelf, but would clean up nicely with a little soap and water. The labels are recessed under glass in blown glass bottles. Bottom reads "Pat. Apr.2 1889 W.T.& C." We have more similar bottles. $70 each + shipping.

 

Medicinal Herb Packs from Wyeth Drug Store c.1890ValerianPacks2.jpg (362347 bytes) - Here are 2 one-ounce packs of herbs from the closing auction of Wyeth Drug Store in Philadelphia some 10 years ago.   German Valerian (precursor of Valium)  and Mandrake Root (aphrodisiac). Humphreys Homeopathic Medicines (circa 1900) - HereHomeopathicPills.jpg (849773 bytes) are 5 pristine unopened packages of homeopathic pills prepared by Humphreys Medicine Co.   The bottom box is opened to show how the pills are bottled. From left to right, the medicines are as follows: 1. COUGHS DUE TO COLDS. Ingredients are Belladonna alkaloids, Phosphorous, Spongia, White Bryony. 2. DISCOMFORTS DURING MENOPAUSE. Ingredients Black Cohosh, Sepia, Lachesis. 3. STYES, INFLAMED EYES. Ingredients not listed on outside package. 4. SIMPLE IRRITATIONS OF THE BLADDER AND BEDWETTING. Ingredients are Spanish Fly, Mercuric Chloride, Causticum Hahnemann, Scouring Rush. 5. SIMPLE DISORDERS OF URINARY TRACT (OPEN) Ingredients are Pipsissewa, Oil of Turpentine, Club Moss, Barberry. Small pills can be seen in bottom of this bottle as well as inserted paper instructions from the opening. We have more of these preparations. $6 each + shipping.

Says "Dose - One pill at Bedtime Price 25 Cents - Only One Cent a Dose." "For Biliousness, Constipation, Torpid Liver, Headache, Dizziness, and all Liver Troubles." $6 + shipping.

 

MERCK 

This is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world today. It was founded in the 19th century and has a rich history, having acquired many smaller companies in its growth to its present stature. Among them were Powers, Weightman & Rosengarten, Mallinckrodt, and Sharpe & Dohme. 

Powers, Weightman & Rosengarten - This company began PowersW&Rosenthal.jpg (107058 bytes)as Powers & Weightman in the 19th century and acquired Rosengarten before World War I. On left is a rare cobalt bottle containing one ounce of granular Lithium Citrate, USP. Original cork still sealed in place. Label refers to the Food and Drug Act of  June 30, 1906 and comes from P.W.& R in Philadelphia. $40 incl. s+i in USA. On right is an empty  brown bottle with full label  which contained one ounce Quinine Salicylate and came from PW&R Co. in Philadelphia. $20 +shipping. 

 

Mallinckrodt - These 3 bottles date from 1930-1940s. Quite popular during the 40s and 50s, they disappeared several decades ago. These books generally were about 4 1/2" by 3 1/2" and ran from 250 to 500 pages. They were usually profusely illustrated, as are these, to illustrate the story. These titles are "Dick Tracy, Special FBI Operative" (1943), "Goofy in Giant Trouble" (1968), and "Tim McCoy and the Sandy Gulch Stampede" (1939).TimMcCoyBook.jpg (67755 bytes) All are complete with no lost, torn or damaged pages. Lenin - Soviet Gilded Plaster Bust (1959) - recently LeninBust.jpg (100451 bytes)brought from Russia.  Marked on back "S.U. '59" in cyrillic for the maker's initials an date of manufacture. Piece chipped off base on reverse. Has been re-gilded after that. Does not mar appearance. $34 + s+i in USA.

3 Bottles circa 1900 - All are undamaged, cork stopper bottles showing slight lavendar coloration showing the manganese content of the glass which indicates their age(circa 1900). $2 each plus shipping.
