Graf Zeppelin Collection

Although less famous than its sister ship HINDENBURG, which burned in Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1937 spelling the end of Germany's lighter than air ships held aloft with Hydrogen, the Graf Zeppelin was probably the most successful of Count Zeppelin's creations. It flew mostly in Europe but also around the world and to Latin America as well. This group of original Graf Zeppelin items were obtained from a collection in Eastern Europe.

Original Graf Zeppelin Foto Postcards - These were purchased during the flight by travelers. We show 4 which are described in German on the reverses:   Graf Zeppelin in its hangar; Looking into the cockpit from the rear; Guests dining; and Graf Zeppelin "landing" on the Bodensee. All 4 for $95 + shipping.

Genuine Graf Zeppelin Teapot - For service of tea or coffee at the travelers' table. Painted wooden handle.   Photograph of the base is hard to read.   It says "1L" (one liter) and has a logo of an airship in an oval with the letters "S.A." (Sud Amerika) (South America) and "ZEPPELIN"  above the oval. Below the oval it says "Rein Aluminium" (Pure Aluminum). $120 + shipping.

Graf Zeppelin Staff Badges - In 1933 the Graf Zeppelin undertook a "Jubilee Journey" between North and South America.   Its crew wore these badges which attest to that journey. Reverses bear the mark of their manufacturer "Kerbach Dresden." Note the swastikas on the Zeppelin's tail fins. Each $30 + shipping.

Graf Zeppelin Flight Commander's Badge - From its home port in Friedrichshafen Germany,   the Graf Zeppelin made trips all over and around the world. This badge was worn by its Flight Commander or Captain on a trip from Friedrishshafen to Tokyo, to Los Angeles, and to Lakehurst, New Jersey where the Hindenburg later burned. Marked FLL on reverse. $80 + shipping.

Olympics 1936 in Berlin Germany

Just in time for the Olympics! The 1936 XIth Olympiad in Berlin was on of the most famous in history. The Nazi government pulled out all the stops to show the world what it could do. Here are 2 highly collectible items from that time:

1936 Olympics Board Game - Produced by the Toy Game Society in Munich Germany in 1936, this game is for 2-4 players.   Thrown dice enable players to move pieces through trials in archery, swimming, track events, shooting and fencing - 5 trials. The board opens to 12" by 16 ." Pieces include horses and pawns in wood and plastic. The instructions are complicated and written in German in the top inside. Totally undamaged except the top has been crushed at some point but is still intact. Great for collectors of Olympics items, toys, or World War II militaria.  Bright area in center of the board is camera flashback only. $150 + shipping. 

1936 Olympics Desk Tray - Produced by Werner March in 1936 for the XIth Olympiad in Berlin, Germany, this is a desk tray for pencils, pens, etc. in celluloid/heavy plastic.   Dark chocolate brown and displays the entire layout of the Olympic games with the stadium in the center. Completely undamaged. Top center has the 5 Olympic rings and says,"XI Olympiad August 1936 Reichssportfeld Berlin." Reverse has the producer's address, pressing information, etc. in German. Light area at lower right is camera flashback only. $120 + shipping.

Czarist Russian Icons 1750-1850

These are all original Russian icons we recently brought in from Russia. Most are of the triptych variety which open to show 3 sides with religious scenes and designed to be "traveling icons" carried with one on a trip. They date from the period of Empress Catherine II (The Great) through that of Czar Alexander I. We will be adding several over the next few weeks.

Czar's Gate Icon circa 1800 - HEAVY brass opens to show 4 sides with religious scenes   "Twelve Feasts and the Apotheosis of the Icon of the Virgin." Front is rough hewn like most similar workmanship of the 18th century.   Inside foto taken in sunlight and front was scanned. Slight wear to the figures but detail is considerably sharper than pics suggest. Outlined with hot baked enamel. 6 inches by 14 inches open  $325 + shipping.

Russian Icon Saint Nicholas circa 1800 - Small traveling brass triptych icon displays angel overlooking   Christ with all 12 Apostles pictured with their names in Russian. 2 1/2 inches high; 4 inches open. $110 + shipping. 

Rare Russian Traveling Icon circa 1775 - Small scarce folding type designed to be   worn on a chain around the neck. Catherine the Great period.   Much of the original hot baked enamel out line is missing. Heavy brass construction.  Depicts Christ as a baby with Mary and Christ after ascension. $170 + shipping.

Small Russian Traveling Icon Saint Nicholas circa 1825 - Hammered silver over wood block.   The face and hands one sees through the holes in the silver are Czar Nicholas I of Russia. $90 + shipping. 

Imperial Russian Orthodox Icon - Ascent of Elijah the Prophet circa 1775 - From the period of Catherine the Great, this   heavy brass icon shows Elijah standing on ground and ascending into heaven riding in a chariot surrounded by flames and drawn by winged horses. Angels in adoration. Some hot baked enamel outlines are missing. 5 inches by 6 inches. Plain back. $225 + shipping.

Walt Disney Comics & Stories

We are not comic book experts, so please examine the pics and read carefully.

March 1945 Number 54 Vol. 5 No 6 - This comic has no detached or torn pages and no  writing or scribbles. A slight roll and break to the binding can be seen in the scan. Has the usual Donald and his nephews lead story by Barks, individual wartime comics, Bucky Bug, and Mickey Mouse mystery. $18 + shipping. 

April 1945 No. 55 Vol. 5 No.7 - Very Good condition. Cover attached with 2 staples and no roll or break to binding.  No scribbles or writing. All pages present and undamaged. June 1946 No. 69 Vol. 6 No. 9 - Cover detached, but both staples present. No roll or break to binding.   No scribbles or writing. All pages present and undamaged. One slight midline vertical fold. Stories of Donald and his nephews, Bucky Bug, Li'l Bad Wolf,  Mickey Mouse in the World of Tomorrow and shorts of Mickey, Goofy, Donald, etc. $14 + shipping.

Attractive Art Deco (c.1930) Cosmetic Compact Pendant -  Lovely teal-green and salmon hot-baked enamel on chrome. A couple negligible   chips to enamel. A hook at the top allows it to be worn as a pendant. Inside has a rotating chrome divider which moves to open to rouge, makeup, or powder compartments. When holes are placed over the powder section, powder can be shaken to be used with a puff. $25 + shipping. 

Beautiful Japanese Meiji Era Menko Cards (circa 1900) - Large cards almost 2 1/2 inches in diameter.  100 cards in all. The people pictured are from Japanese history. Stiff cardboard.  The names are Honda Tadakatsu(1548-1601), Kusonoki  Masashige(1294-1336), Minamotono Yoshiie (1039-1106), Imagawa Yoshimoto(1519-1560), and Momo Tarou (Folklore Hero). Condition is excellent - No damage. $46 + shipping.

We have recently acquired several pieces of beautiful "Nippon" porcelain. Nippon is the name by which Japanese identified their country. From about 1900 to 1920, Japanese porcelain for export was identified by this name. After 1920, usually identified by "Made in Japan" until WWII. 

Beautiful Nippon Dessert Dishes (6) - These are 6 elegant Nippon dessert  dishes (or rice bowls) with hand-painted butterflies and trimmed in gold. Undamaged except 2 each have one small fleabite on the edge. Bottom says "Hand-painted Nippon" and has a center seal with "M" in the center which stands for "Midori," the importer.  $41 + shipping.

Exquisite gold-trimmed Matching Candy and Cookie Plates -  Beautiful, delicate  Japanese porcelain matching plates trimmed in hand-painted gold! Absolutely no damage! Slight wear to the gold on one of the handles of the round plate. Each is approximately 7 1/4 inches in diameter and marked on the bottom with several Japanese characters and "Hand-painted Nippon." $45 + shipping.

Beautiful Nippon 2-handled Vase or Jug. - We really don't know what this  item was intended for, but it is exquisitely delicate hand-painted porcelain. No chips, breaks, or crazing.  Base says "Hand-painted" and has a leaf with "Nippon" beneath it. 5 inches tall. $39 + shipping.

Royal Dalton Milk Pitcher (c. 1902) - This is a beautiful  early Edwardian milk pitcher made by Royal Dalton.  Has the Royal Dalton seal on the base, a Lion,  and "England." Hand-painted and signed by the artist, "M." Base also says "Orlando" which is the name by which the knight, Roland, is known throughout much of Europe. Roland was the Emperor, Charlemagne's bravest knight as well as his nephew.  He warned the emperor of the treachery of the Moorish king, Marsilion and of his father-in-law, Ganilon. Roland was killed in the battle of Roncevalles, while fighting to save Charlemagne's army. There are no chips or cracks to this pitcher, only slight crazing from age on the inside and handle. $93 + shipping.

1687 French Book on Religious Wars. - This is a fascinating piece of history! Published and printed in 1687, this book  deals with the religious wars raging in Europe in the years 1536-1547.  It is bound in what we believe to be sheepskin and sinew, and is written in French which we do not read. It appears to be addressed to the King, who, at the time was Louis XIV (the "Sun King"  who built Versailles). Published in Paris. In the years with which it deals, Henry VIII was King of England, who threw the Catholics out of England,  and the Huguenots(Calvinists) and Catholics were involved in protracted internecine strife under Francis I in France.  $75 + shipping.    

Russian Icon 1700s to 1800s. - Depicts the crucifixion with figures in adoration. Note the skull at the base of the cross signifying Golgatha, the "place of the skull," which the gospels state was the place of crucifixion. Solid brass with enamel. 6 1/2" by 4". $150 + shipping.

Czarist Russian Village Elder's Badge: - This is a nice rarity: a heavy, brass Volost Elder's (Volostnoi Starshina) Badge dated February 19, 1861. The peasant commune executed administrative tasks in the local community, and was an actor in the larger administrative system of  nineteenth century Russia. Several peasant communes formed a "Volost," and the Volost Elder was elected by the male household  heads. A court of elected peasant magistrates operated in each Volost with the right to hear cases involving petty civil  and criminal cases subject to tight State administration. At lower left you see a group photo of volost starshinas gathered in Moscow May 1896 in honor of the Royal Coronation celebration. We believe the badge was worn about the neck on a chain. $225 + shipping. 

1890s Kerosene Railroad Lantern - Nice piece of Americana. Top Marked, "Traffic Gard Manufacturing Co. Embury New York USA No. 40." Base Marked "City  of Milwaukee." This is an original KEROSENE  lantern used to direct railroad traffic in Milwaukee, Wisc. Originally, the top was bright red and base yellow. Overall quite good condition, but probably needs repainting. We have made no effort to do that, leaving that decision to the ultimate owner.  $65 + shipping

Genuine Hand-carved Meerschaum Pipe and Case (c. 1890) - The name "meerschaum" comes from the German and means "sea foam." It is a cream-colored mineral called magnesium silicate. In earlier times it was found floating in the Black Sea and was believed to be petrified sea foam..This pipe belonged to the Great-Grandfather of a friend of ours. He was born in 1860 and began smoking this pipe at about the age of 30. This pipe with original amber mouthpiece was made by Wm. DeMuth Co. and is 3.75" long from the edge of the bowl to tip of mouthpiece. There are no chips on the pipe or the carving, but the mouthpiece has a crack in it. The case too is in very good condition as is the velvet lining. Kovel's Guide to Antiques listed an almost identical pipe which sold for $115 in 1997, and its value certainly hasn't diminished since then. $80 + shipping. 

Victorian Burmese Glass Vase - Exquisitely beautiful piece of glassware! The beautiful coloration  of this  type  of American Art glassware was achieved  by the addition  of expensive  elements like Gold and Uranium and is almost impossible to duplicate today due to governmental control of radioactive elements like Uranium. It was then frosted with an acid application. Burmese glass was made by Mt. Washington Glass Company until Pairpoint purchased the company. This lovely piece is 10 1/2" tall. The reddish portion is considerably  lighter than the picture, being a delicate salmon color. $110 + shipping.

Lovely Pre-World War I Accidental Porcelain Bowl - Understated elegance! This bowl was part of a line called Alba Kunst (white art) made by  Albotha Kaiser in  Bavaria before World War I and so states on the bottom along with the Prussian crown. 5" wide at the mouth and has 2 graceful scroll handles. Absolutely unblemished.  $10 + actual shipping charges. 

Old Ice Cream Scoops from a bankrupt Drug Store. - These 3 were acquired from a drug store in business for    over 100 years. All are undamaged and fully functional.  During a large portion of their business, they had a soda fountain. The oldest is in the center from late 1920s-early 1930s. Unmarked. Wooden handle and it functions by turning the little knob on the back, which is difficult to see in the foto. $20 + shipping. That on left is late 1930s-early 1940s by Gilchrist and is so-marked. Wooden handle. $20 + shipping. One on right is from late 1940s-early 1950s. Plastic handle. $10 + shipping.

Milady's Victorian Perfume Bottle (1870-1890).  Exquisitely beautiful perfume bottle with glass applicator as pictured. Applied gilt filigree which will turn but cannot be removed. There is a crack deep in the glass which does not, however, mar either the appearance or the functional use of the bottle. Priced to sell at $15 + $10 postage and insurance in USA, since it is so heavy. 

Lovely Depression Glass Set of Cups and Saucers with Condiment or Candy Dish. Beautiful etched floral pattern. There are 6 undamaged cups and 6 matching undamaged saucers. The dish is divided into 3 compartments and contained in metal Farberwear holder. We will sell either the Candy Dish or cups and saucers separately if desired. $75 for the entire set + actual shipping charges. 

Needlepoint, framed, 1877. - This exquisite piece has unbelievably tiny workmanship. We've never seen more detail in needlepoint. Daisies and goldenrod on beautiful green velvet. No picture can do justice to this piece, which is in condition as if it were done yesterday. 17" by 14." Provenance handwritten on reverse says: "This picture were (sic) made by my mother about 1877. I had them (sic) framed 1963. Ammie Fellers Swayre. My mother Cordelia C. Dominick." The piece came from the Fellers estate auctioned in April 2003 from Prosperity, South Carolina. Photo was taken with flash on an overcast day, and colors much brighter and richer than picture suggests. $60 + actual shipping charges.

1950s Hazel Atlas Drink Mixer with 6 Glasses. - An exquisite set! Absolutely unblemished. Only the slightest of fading of the red color on one glass. Looks as if it was never used at all. Red colors and chrome much brighter than the picture. We had to use a filter to avoid flashback from the brilliant chrome. Straight out of the 50s. $50 plus  actual shipping costs.

Beautiful Venetian Art Glass Vase (1950s) - This lovely 11" tall vase is a bright cherry color with gold trimming which does not show overly well in the picture. Pictures quaint little Forget-Me-Nots on a gold shield scroll background.  Clear swirl pedestal base. Made in Italy in the 1950s and undamaged. $11 + actual shipping charges.

Cut-To-Clear Carafe & Glass - These were quite popular during the early part of the last century. They were used as individual water or juice decanters, or sometimes  for  wine, at the bedside or on a working desk in a den or library. We have two sets: one is ruby red and the other cobalt. The carafe is designed to house the glass on top as a top. The cobalt is shown alone to clarify the exquisite cut-to-clear pattern, which is identical in both. Pictures are very difficult with these deeply colored items. Both sets are undamaged. Beautiful! Either set is $55 + actual shipping charges. Both sets for $100 + actual shipping.

Ashtray Made From Insulator - You may have seen these insulators supporting high tension wires across the country when you were a child in the early part of the last century. They were made from heavy glass, like this one,  or from porcelain. Someone made a stand from heavy copper electrical wire for this one several years ago. It is absolutely undamaged and  unblemished and a much brighter emerald-green than the scan reveals.  $11 incl. s+i in USA.

Oval Portraits (2) - We do not know the exact age of these prints, but they came from an old estate. Definitely post-1900. They have wooden frames and are slightly over 13" high. We believe them to be English. Slight edge damage on both frames, which is not, however, obvious when they are hung. Both have the same flesh tones, but that on right appears lighter due to foto in direct sunlight. $25 + Actual shipping charges. 

MEDICAL, DENTISTRY, PHARMACY

Watch this section! We have recently acquired a LARGE amount of material from the sale of pharmacies in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Philadelphia and will be adding to this section over the next few weeks. Sales of pharmacies are becoming increasingly rare, and there will be little of this material available in the forseeable future. Many of these items make great gifts for the doctor, pharmacist, or student.

Medical Blood Cups (2) circa 1900 - Any of you who like to watch old movies may have seen these in use. Before the advent of penicillin, Diphtheria and pheumonia were horrendous killers - especially of children. Doctors often heated these glass instruments and placed them on a child's back, creating a partial vacuum. They were often used as many as a dozen at a time. It sucked blood to the surface and bordered on quackery. $30 each including s+i in USA or $55 for the pair.  

Medical Rectal Dilator circa 1900 - Before the advent of sigmoidoscopy, doctors used these instruments to examine the rectum and instill medications through the small hole visible in the top. $40 incl. s+i in USA.

All of these bottles are undamaged unless otherwise stated. Labels are usually dark and show wear as might be expected from their age. Some pictures are too dark to see any detail due to dark aging, but the descriptions are accurate. And remember our return policy from our POLICIES Page: We will take back anything we sell for any reason or NO reason. We believe these are all bottles you will be proud to own. Also, bottles containing medicines are sold for collector value only. We caution most strongly against using any of the material which is 50 to 100 years old!!

MERCK 

This is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world today. It was founded in the 19th century and has a rich history, having acquired many smaller companies in its growth to its present stature. Among them were Powers, Weightman & Rosengarten, Mallinckrodt, and Sharpe & Dohme. 

Powers, Weightman & Rosengarten - This company began as Powers & Weightman in the 19th century and acquired Rosengarten before World War I. On left is a rare cobalt bottle containing one ounce of granular Lithium Citrate, USP. Original cork still sealed in place. Label refers to the Food and Drug Act of  June 30, 1906 and comes from P.W.& R in Philadelphia. $40 incl. s+i in USA. On right is an empty  brown bottle with full label  which contained one ounce Quinine Salicylate and came from PW&R Co. in Philadelphia. $20 incl. s+i in USA. 

Mallinckrodt - These 3 bottles date from 1930-1940s. On left is a one pound bottle, 2/3 full, of Sodium Acetate from the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, Saint Louis, Montreal, Philadelphia, New York. $15 + actual shipping. On right is a full bottle of Iodeikon (25 oz.) with black bakelite screw top and original box with original insert seen alongside. $13 incl. s+i in USA. Apothecary Bottle "Spanish Fly"  - Circa 1910. Came from sale of Greenfield's Drug Store in Brooklyn, New York est. 1900. Matching ground mouth and stopper and is 9" tall. Blown glass bottle undamaged. Pristine label reads: "TR. CANTHARIDIS" (Spanish Fly). $48 including shipping in USA. 

Collectibles:

Dick Tracy, Goofy, Tim McCoy Big Little Books. - How long has it been since you saw one of these? Quite popular during the 40s and 50s, they disappeared several decades ago. These books generally were about 4 1/2" by 3 1/2" and ran from 250 to 500 pages. They were usually profusely illustrated, as are these, to illustrate the story. These titles are "Dick Tracy, Special FBI Operative" (1943), "Goofy in Giant Trouble" (1968), and "Tim McCoy and the Sandy Gulch Stampede" (1939). All are complete with no lost, torn or damaged pages. Covers of Dick Tracy and Goofy are in excellent condition while binding of Tim McCoy is missing as can be seen. Russian Transportation Police Badge - These are the boys who look for terrorist bombs, etc. in Russia. They inspect baggage, etc. on planes, ships, and railroad transport. Striking set of gold wings with a wheel and anchor on red,l blue, and white bullseye. Says "Russian Transport Inspector" in Russian on white ring. $7.50 incl. s+i in USA.

Soviet Militia Patrol Breast Badge - Striking and quite rare! These were worn by the Soviet Militia Patrol on the breast of their tunics. 3 inches tall. Says "PATROL" in Russian. $19 incl. shipping in USA.

Lenin - Soviet Gilded Plaster Bust (1959) - recently brought from Russia.  Marked on back "S.U. '59" in cyrillic for the maker's initials an date of manufacture. Piece chipped off base on reverse. Has been re-gilded after that. Does not mar appearance. $34 incl. s+i in USA.

Paines Celery Compound Bottle (c. 1890) - Rare and highly collectible old medicinal bottle. Blown in 2-piece mold with applied top. Bubbles in glass. 9 3/4" tall and square base. Undamaged. $20 + actual shipping charges. 

3 Bottles circa 1900 - All are undamaged, cork stopper bottles showing slight lavendar coloration showing the manganese content of the glass which indicates their age(circa 1900). $2 each plus shipping.
